Responses are due by 5:00 p.m. Eastern on May 15.<\/p>\n<p>IARPA seeks information\u00a0regarding\u00a0the current\u00a0state of the art\u00a0(SOTA) in\u00a0biologically derived\u00a0materials suitable for controlled transience in propulsion systems for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). IARPA is interested in understanding how controlled material degradation can be extended beyond structural components to include turbines, engines, motors, and associated propulsion elements.<\/p>\n<p>Of particular interest are approaches that move beyond\u202fultraviolet (UV)-initiated\u202for\u202fwater (H2O)-initiated\u202ftransience mechanisms\u00a0and\u00a0subsequently\u00a0enable\u202fmore diverse triggering modalities that are stable in a range of environmental conditions.\u00a0\u00a0This RFI is issued for planning purposes only and does not constitute a formal solicitation for proposals or suggest the procurement of any materials, components, or systems.<\/p>\n<p>The proliferation of UAV operations across military, intelligence, and civilian domains has raised growing concerns about the environmental footprint of aerospace materials, particularly in scenarios where systems may be lost. Conventional propulsion components,\u00a0and their controls,\u00a0fabricated from persistent materials\u2014metal alloys, engineering plastics, and advanced composites\u2014can remain in ecosystems for decades or centuries. DARPA&#8217;s ICARUS (Inbound, Controlled, Air-Releasable, Unrecoverable Systems) program pioneered a solution for airframe structures by\u00a0demonstrating\u00a0transient materials that\u00a0maintain\u00a0operational performance before undergoing controlled degradation, thereby minimizing persistent environmental residue.<\/p>\n<p>The ICARUS approach employed primarily UV-triggered photopolymers that undergo programmable degradation\u00a0of structural components,\u00a0establishing\u00a0proof-of-concept. However, extending these achievements beyond airframes to propulsion systems\u00a0and their controls\u00a0reveals critical limitations: propulsion components operate under extreme thermal, mechanical, and chemical stresses;\u00a0contain a mixture of material types;\u00a0must maintain structural integrity throughout dynamic mission profiles; require materials compatible with combustion environments or electromagnetic fields; and face significant challenges when UV initiation serves as the primary degradation trigger within enclosed or shielded propulsion assemblies where UV exposure may be limited or absent.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover,\u00a0there may be operational parameters where natural UV exposure\u00a0is\u00a0present.\u00a0\u00a0Environmental conditions that naturally\u00a0degrade materials\u2014humidity, microbial activity, thermal cycling, oxidation\u2014are often more readily available than UV exposure, suggesting\u00a0opportunities for bio-derived materials that\u00a0leverage\u00a0natural decomposition pathways\u00a0to control degradation of an airborne system.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sam.gov\/workspace\/contract\/opp\/ea2620641fc24f78aee63a91244c18cf\/view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Review the IARPA propulsion system materials RFI.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Source: SAM<\/p>\n<p><em>IC News brings you business opportunities like this one each week.
