This alliance will provide AFRL and its collaborators with access to commercial quantum systems to explore practical applications relevant to the Air Force.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAFRL is pleased to partner with IBM to become a\nhub in the Q Network as IBM is a world-leader in the development of quantum\ncomputing hardware,\u201d said Dr. Michael Hayduk, Deputy Director, of AFRL\u2019s\nInformation Directorate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The partnership will allow AFRL to work alongside\nIBM researchers and other select collaborators to investigate relevant Air\nForce problems on actual hardware that may yield a \u2018quantum advantage\u2019 over\nconventional computing. Early applications include optimization problems,\nspeed-up of machine learning algorithms and quantum chemistry simulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hayduk added the partnership \u201cfurther establishes\nthe Mohawk Valley region in New York state as an emerging ecosystem for the\ndevelopment of quantum information science technology.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Paul Alsing, principal physicist and an AFRL\nfellow, said the relationship will accelerate quantum computing\nexperimentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is sometimes said that explaining quantum\ncomputing to someone is like trying to teach them to swim in a pool without\nwater. The IBM quantum computer is that body of water that will allow AFRL-IBM\nHub researchers to swim about and explore pathfinder problems that will\ndemonstrate a quantum advantage over conventional computers, and realize the\npromise of quantum computation that to date has only been theorized,\u201d Alsing\nsaid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The IBM Q Network has established Quantum Hubs\nacross the world, implementing innovative approaches to advancing research by\nproviding the greatest minds in academia, industry, and now the Air Force,\naccess to quantum systems to realize the potential of quantum mechanics.&nbsp;\nOne of the goals of AFRL\u2019s Quantum Hub is to create a broad community of\nresearchers working on the latest gate-based computer(s) to develop expertise,\nand to continually monitor and test new advancements in quantum hardware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The State University of New York is an academic partner. SUNY Chancellor, Kristina M. Johnson, said \u201cwe are\nproud that Air Force Research Laboratory has chosen to partner with SUNY\u2019s\ntalented researchers and students to provide entry into the IBM Q Network, one\nof the leaders in this space. This educational partnership will enable more\nstudents, faculty, and staff to gain access to a hands on experience and\nprovide opportunities in the emerging study of quantum science and\nengineering.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This AFRL Quantum Hub will be the one of the\ninitial technologies positioned in the Open Innovation Environment (OIE) in\nRome, New York at AFRL\u2019s Information Directorate.&nbsp; The OIE is designed to\nbe an enhanced collaborative area fostering discovery and technology\nadvancement through fundamental scientific research.&nbsp; The environment is\nan agile and transformative ecosystem connecting global technology leaders to\ncollaborate and solve complex technological challenges.&nbsp; The AFRL Quantum\nHub will be used to investigate quantum applications in algorithms, machine\nlearning, neural network training, risk\/decision analysis, quantum simulation\nof molecular and strongly correlated systems, photonic phenomena, and specific\nbiological systems.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AFRL scientists and engineers partner with some of\nthe leading researchers in the quantum field from across academia, industry and\ngovernment organizations including the State University of New York campuses at\nBinghamton University, University at Buffalo, University at Albany, Stony Brook\nUniversity, and SUNY Polytechnic Institute; Massachusetts Institute of\nTechnology, Rochester Institute of Technology, Northeastern University, the\nNational Science Foundation, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration,\nthe Naval Research Laboratory, and the Army Research Laboratory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Col. Timothy Lawrence, director of AFRLs Information Directorate, said the agreement enables the leading DoD researchers from all of the military services to have access time on the IBM quantum computer.\u00a0 He noted the National Defense Strategy and Air Force Science and Technology Strategy for 2030 emphasis on strategic competitors like China, who are aggressively pursuing quantum computing for military advantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are conducting development and testing of many of the new high-performance computing architectures, including neuromorphic computing, so we want to be certain we\u2019re also positioning ourselves to lead quantum idea generation and capability development for the Air Force,\u201d Lawrence said. \u201cYou don\u2019t have to be an rocket scientist at AFRL to understand that getting behind in quantum could lead to serious concerns, so that\u2019s not a position we are willing to
