BAE Systems has delivered the sensor subassembly and sensor system controller components for the Next Generation Overhead Persistent Infrared Polar (NGP) program, the company announced May 15. The program will provide the U.S. Space Force with advanced missile warning, technical intelligence and battlespace characterization mission capabilities.

This milestone delivery keeps the program on track for full assembly of the payload, known as Flight Unit 1, expected to launch in 2028.

“We met multiple challenges across a multiyear timeframe to successfully deliver our components for the next stage of full payload assembly,” said Thai Sheridan, vice president and general manager of military space for BAE Systems Space & Mission Systems. “This program will provide essential next-generation defense and intelligence capabilities for the Space Force.”

The sensor subassembly built by BAE Systems is a significant component of the mission payload and provides the optics, pointing mechanism, controlling electronics and electrical bus interface to the spacecraft.

The sensor system controller interfaces directly to the space vehicle to receive commands and provide telemetry data for the mission. It provides power control and conversion for sensor assembly components as well as high-accuracy mirror direction.

The BAE Systems hardware originally was designed for use with the geosynchronous Earth orbit (GEO) element of the program. Featuring a highly adaptable design, the components were able to be repurposed for the NGP mission, allowing the program to meet challenging schedule needs.

On May 18, Legion Intelligence announced a product expansion designed to make applied AI operational for national security, launching Mission Packs and Centurion III at SOF Week 2026.

As the U.S. Department of War accelerates toward AI-first operations, the challenge is no longer whether AI can generate useful outputs. The challenge is whether AI can carry out real work across fragmented systems, contested environments, and high-consequence operations while keeping humans in command.

Legion is built for that shift, according to the company. The company is introducing the Command Layer, its architecture for turning intent into governed action across agents, mission systems, and operational environments. At SOF Week, Legion will demonstrate how that architecture becomes deployable capability through Mission Packs, which package AI agents into role-specific operational capabilities, and Centurion, its deployable edge AI system for denied, degraded, intermittent, and limited environments.

“Agentic AI will only matter to national security if it can do real work under real constraints,” said Ben Van Roo, CEO and co-founder of Legion Intelligence. “The Command Layer is what makes that possible: agents execute the work, Mission Packs make them usable for the roles military teams already perform, and Centurion brings that capability to the edge where missions actually happen, with governance built in so human authority remains intact.”

Mission Packs put Legion’s AI agents, applications, data connections, and governance safeguards to work on the jobs teams perform every day. Instead of starting from a blank prompt, users start with purpose-built capabilities for the work they need to complete, from preparing intelligence products and coordinating operations to surfacing command decisions and improving maintenance readiness.

“Mission Packs make AI agents usable in the real world,” said Steve Mahoney, SVP of Product at Legion Intelligence. “They give teams a starting point for action, not another empty chat interface. Each Pack brings together agents, tools, data, and controls for a specific operational role, so teams start from mission-ready capability instead of a blank prompt.”

Legion is also introducing Centurion III, an ultra-small form factor that brings governed AI into a laptop-class footprint at the edge. It extends Legion’s deployable AI footprint into environments where cloud access, stable networks, and centralized infrastructure cannot be assumed.

On May 18, Avatara announced the launch of its Mission Ready Offering (MRO), a new offering that gives defense contractors a faster, more predictable path to CMMC Level 2 readiness.

On May 12, iDirect Government (iDirectGov), a provider of satellite communications to the military and government, announced the release of the 450 Rackmount (RM) software-defined modem (SDM) that delivers resilient and secure connectivity across theatres, airspace and all mission phases.

The 450RM operates on iDirectGov’s Evolution Defense, Viasat GX, SES Flex and DVB-S2X networks, as well as the military-standard 188/165B Enhanced Bandwidth Efficient Modem (EBEM). It supports operations across geostationary (GEO), highly elliptical (HEO), medium Earth orbit (MEO), and low Earth orbit (LEO) constellations, while maintaining the highest security standards.

Designed for space-constricted environments, the half-rack unit allows two 450RMs to be mounted side-by-side in the rack, minimizing rack space requirements while providing a protected, durable form factor.

On May 4, Owl Cyber Defense announced the launch of its Incident Response Diode (IRD), the industry’s first pocket-sized protocol filtering diode (PFD) for incident response and forensics teams. The Owl IRD was developed to help users securely move evidence from compromised endpoints into trusted analysis environments without adding risk. Owl IRD will be made available to select customers for field testing.

When an endpoint is compromised, responders must race against the clock to pull critical data before systems are wiped, reimaged or attacked again. But risky connections and legacy technology may spread malware, break chain of custody, and trigger costly enclave rebuilds. The Owl IRD solves this with hardware-enforced, protocol-aware one-way transfer per U.S. Government PFD requirements. As a PFD, the Owl IRD enhances the unidirectional nature of a simple diode with protocol filtering at the FPGA level — delivering a secure, repeatable evidence path that reduces reinfection risk and preserves forensic integrity. On April 28, AeroVironment, Inc. announced the release of Halo_Shield, a modular, distributed, and cost-effective counter-unmanned aircraft system (C-UAS) designed to predict, detect, track, identify and defeat advanced airborne threats—including Group 1–5 UAS, coordinated drone swarms, and subsonic cruise missiles—protecting critical infrastructure and deployed forces worldwide.

Developed as part of AV’s holistically integrated C-UAS strategy, Halo_Shield introduces a unique, tile-based layered defense architecture that is open, scalable, and adaptable to today’s evolving threats. The system is designed to support emerging homeland defense priorities by enabling resilient, area-wide protection of high-value U.S. and allied partner assets, including borders, military installations, and other critical infrastructure. AV is currently demonstrating capabilities and has deployed Halo_Shield tiles at select critical sites.
