On May 18, Raytheon, an RTX business, announced that it has been awarded a contract from the Office of Naval Research to further develop advanced radar software for next-generation naval radars.

Under the contract, Raytheon’s advanced technology team will develop software that enables each building block within a radar to operate independently, allowing a single radar to perform multiple missions simultaneously. By treating each building block as its own software-defined aperture, the radar can rapidly adapt to changing operational needs and better share crowded frequency bands with commercial networks such as 5G.

“The electromagnetic spectrum is more crowded than ever, and our systems have to be smarter about how they operate in it,” said Colin Whelan, president of advanced technology at Raytheon. “With precise, software-driven control over where and how we radiate, we’re taking an important step forward in how we use software‑defined apertures to keep pace with evolving mission demands.”

Building on Raytheon’s long-standing work in software‑defined apertures, this flexible, modular architecture delivers capability enhancements through software rather than hardware redesign. This approach allows radar performance to be adapted and expanded over time with greater speed, lower cost, and reduced risk.

Once the software development is complete, Raytheon will conduct a series of demonstrations to validate independent control of radar modules and associated capabilities such as multi-mission operation and spectrum sharing. Upon successful validation, the technology is expected to be transitioned into operational naval radar systems.

On April 13, Raytheon, an RTX business, successfully demonstrated a new event-based mid-wave infrared (MWIR) camera that tracks high speed objects in real time while dramatically reducing processing and power demands. Unlike traditional cameras that capture full frames and rely on software to detect changes, event-based cameras track only pixel-level motion, producing a continuous stream of events.

During a demonstration in Northern California, the event-based camera tracked multiple targets, including ground vehicles, aircraft, and live fires, by capturing rapid motion not achievable with conventional frame-based infrared cameras. By reporting only changes in motion rather than full image frames, the camera was able to deliver a near-instantaneous view of activity happening during the exercise.

“This technology represents a new way of sensing the world in mid-wave infrared,” said Colin Whelan, president of advanced technology at Raytheon. “By focusing only on motion instead of recording every frame and analyzing after the fact, we gain the ability to track very fast objects with far less data and processing, enabling much quicker threat detection and response time.”

This capability opens the door to a wide range of defense and national security applications, particularly in environments where speed, clutter, and high volumes of data challenge existing sensors and processors. This includes enhanced battlefield awareness and base protection, smarter missile guidance, and more effective surveillance from aircraft and unmanned systems.

Developed under the DARPA-funded Fast Event-based Neuromorphic Camera and Electronics (FENCE) program, the camera was built from the ground up as a new sensing architecture. With the initial contract complete, Raytheon’s Advanced Technology team is now exploring follow on demonstrations and data collection that would showcase the sensor across a broader set of mission scenarios and target types.

On November 4, Raytheon UK, part of RTX’s Raytheon business, announced that it has been awarded a contract to provide orbital analysts in support of the UK’s Space Domain Awareness mission.

Under the contract, the UK Space Agency will gain access to Raytheon UK’s NORSSTrack software, which enhances orbital analysis and operational responsiveness by mapping and tracking satellites, monitoring potential collisions and debris, assessing re-entries and providing critical data for decision-making.

The analysts will be based at a National Space Operations Centre facility at Royal Air Force Base High Wycombe, delivering an analysis and response capability that underpins the UK’s growing leadership in space operations.

“Our orbital analysts are among the most capable in the industry,” said James Gray, chief executive and managing director of Raytheon UK. “We’ve invested heavily in developing this talent, particularly in the North-East, as part of our continued support of space domain awareness.”

Space domain awareness remains a vital national capability, ensuring the UK can operate safely, securely and confidently in an increasingly contested space environment. As highlighted in the UK’s Strategic Defence Review, it is central to protecting critical space assets and strengthening resilience across government, defence and industry.

On September 23, Raytheon, an RTX business, announced that it has unveiled the latest iteration of its combat-proven APG-82 radar, the APG-82(V)X. The new radar variant incorporates cutting-edge gallium nitride (GaN) technology to enhance the radar’s effectiveness, delivering increased range, advanced air-to-air, air-to-ground and electronic warfare capabilities.

APG-82(V)X enables faster target detection, tracking and engagement with multi-function fire control and electronic warfare capabilities. As an advanced active electronically scanned array radar, it uses thousands of transmit and receive modules, which enable the radar to rapidly switch between transmitting and receiving signals, providing greater reliability and more precise targeting against aerial threats like cruise missiles, drones and modern fighter aircraft.

“The enhanced capability of this next-generation radar enables aircrew to detect and engage threats at longer ranges than ever before, providing a crucial first-look, first-shoot advantage,” said Dan Theisen, president of advanced products and solutions at Raytheon. “As the threat environment evolves, this new radar will ensure faster decision making and superior situational awareness in contested environments.”

The APG-82(V)X radar incorporates GaN technology, which provides greater range without needing additional power. It’s scalable and built with open architecture standards, with next generation technology and improved processor speed, providing significantly increased capability to current and future generation aircraft.

Development of the radars has begun in El Segundo, California and production of the radars will leverage mature production lines in Forest, Mississippi.

On May 6, Raytheon, an RTX business, announced that it successfully demonstrated the Air Space Total Awareness for Rapid Tactical Execution, or ASTARTE, system’s ability to integrate with multiple military command and control systems during Project Convergence Capstone 5.

Developed by a team of technologists led by Raytheon Advanced Technology, ASTARTE enhances airspace operations and deconfliction in highly congested battlespaces. The software automates the ability to provide a real-time common operational picture by integrating with existing command and control systems, predicting airspace usage, and improving speed by reducing time for planning and generating courses of action for joint fires.

“ASTARTE’s advanced capabilities in airspace deconfliction and mission planning provide a technological edge that can enhance overall effectiveness in multi-domain operations,” said Colin Whelan, president of advanced technology at Raytheon. “This makes the system an extremely valuable asset for modern, complex, large scale military operations.”

In a Live, Virtual, Constructive environment, Army and Air Force personnel worked together to prosecute dynamic targets using a combination of fires, fixed wing aircraft, and attack helicopters. Operators used the ASTARTE software to generate courses of action for airspace conflicts with each operator seeing only relevant information for their specific function.

Based on its analysis, ASTARTE provided real-time recommendations to the operators, saving time and improving the quality of decision-making compared to current manual and standalone processes.

Since last year’s demonstration at the Capstone 4 event, the ASTARTE system has been refined and improved to provide new capabilities, handle larger scenarios, and improve reliability to adapt to changing operational needs. This flexibility is crucial as military requirements and technologies continue to advance.

On April 1, BrainChip Holdings Ltd, producer of ultra-low power, fully digital, event-based, neuromorphic AI, announced that it is partnering with Raytheon Company, an RTX business, to service a contract for $1.8M from the Air Force Research Laboratory on neuromorphic radar signaling processing.

Raytheon Company will deliver services and support as a partner with BrainChip for the completion of the contract award. The Air Force Research Labs contract, under the topic number AF242-D015, is titled “Mapping Complex Sensor Signal Processing Algorithms onto Neuromorphic Chips.” The project focuses on a specific type of radar processing known as micro-Doppler signature analysis, which offers unprecedented activity discrimination capabilities.

Neuromorphic hardware represents a low-power solution for edge devices, consuming significantly less energy than traditional computing hardware for signal processing and artificial intelligence tasks. If successful, this project could embed sophisticated radar processing solutions in power-constrained and thermally constrained weapon systems, such as missiles, drones and drone defense systems.

BrainChip’s Akida processor is a revolutionary computing architecture that is designed to process neural networks and machine learning algorithms at ultra-low power consumption, making it ideal for edge computing applications. The company’s neuromorphic technology improves the cognitive communication capabilities on size, weight and power & cost (SWaP-C)-constrained platforms such as military, spacecraft and robotics for commercial and government markets.

“Radar signaling processing will be implemented on ever-smaller mobile platforms, so minimizing system SWaP-C is critical,” said Sean Hehir, CEO of BrainChip. “This improved radar signaling performance per watt for the Air Force Research Laboratory showcases how neuromorphic computing can achieve significant benefits in the most mission-critical use cases.”

Raytheon, an RTX business, announced on March 24 that it has been awarded a follow-on contract from the U.S. Army Futures Command, Futures and Concepts Center to continue to utilize its Rapid Campaign Analysis and Demonstration Environment, or RCADE, modeling and simulation capability.

During the initial contract, Raytheon developed large-scale theater scenarios to assess concepts of operations in a multi-domain conflict. In this follow-on effort, Raytheon will establish a continuous experimentation environment with RCADE to enable the U.S. Army’s concept developers and Battle Labs to inform strategic force design decisions.

“This contract demonstrates the U.S. Army’s confidence in our ability to quickly analyze options and adapt solutions to meet evolving needs,” said Colin Whelan, president of advanced technology at Raytheon. “In partnership, we’re helping to provide the operational perspective to optimize decision-making through data-driven modeling and simulation insights.”

Raytheon’s RCADE capabilities enable analysts from the Raytheon Advanced Technology team to work with the Army team to ensure a continuous feedback loop between modeling and simulation and emerging real-world threats.

This iterative, partnership-based approach enables rapid innovation and experimentation that other Department of Defense agencies can leverage to quickly test and refine solutions for their own unique challenges.

On November 4, Antaris announced that it is collaborating with SEAKR Engineering, LLC, part of RTX’s Raytheon business, to integrate SEAKR products into the Antaris Cloud Platform to conduct remote hardware-in-the-loop (HITL) testing and certification. The combined work deepens Antaris’ ability to provide end-to-end Full Mission Virtualization capabilities to the U.S. Department of Defense under multiple contracts.

Antaris simplifies the design, simulation, and operation of satellites by abstracting space vehicle components – including radios, imagers, thrusters, etc. – into its next generation TrueTwin simulation environment. Because this abstraction process incorporates all the satellite subsystems and their associated software, a TrueTwin virtual satellite can replicate at scale the same behaviors and functions as a physical satellite that has yet to be built. As a result, engineers can create a fully virtualized mission of their proposed spacecraft and ground systems.

Antaris will integrate its cloud platform with SEAKR Engineering’s subsystems hosted at their Colorado headquarters. The companies will then utilize TrueTwin to run simulations involving SEAKR hardware – such as the high-performance, autonomy enabled Sentinel product line – to validate their performance and functionality.

“By integrating SEAKR Engineering’s payload catalog into the Antaris Cloud Platform, teams will be able to test mission concepts and validate hardware choices before buying a single screw,” said Tom Barton, CEO and co-founder of Antaris. “We’re excited to offer SEAKR’s hardware within the Antaris Cloud Platform, which will accelerate the ability of customers to operate in space with maximum efficiency, leveraging better data and streamlined processes for enhanced decision-making.”

On July 10 Raytheon, an RTX business, announced that it has been awarded a contract from the U.S. Army Futures Command (AFC) Futures and Concepts Center (FCC) to conduct theater level concept experimentation and mission analysis to support agile learning of the future battlefield.

Under the contract, a Raytheon team will use its Rapid Campaign Analysis and Demonstration Environment, known as RCADE, to develop large-scale theater scenarios to help FCC leaders assess concepts of operations in a multi-domain conflict. Quantitative data and findings from the scenarios will help identify capabilities needed to succeed in future conflicts.

“RCADE helps our customers look at some of the most difficult missions and evaluate how to change the outcome for the positive,” said Colin Whelan, president of advanced technology at Raytheon. “Our team of highly trained experts power this groundbreaking capability, enabling it to deliver credible, unbiased solutions.”

RCADE is part of Raytheon’s integrated ecosystem of modeling and simulation capabilities that are fed by real-world analytics, models, and data. It creates an experimentation environment where customers can explore battlefield scenarios, assess how different variables impact mission outcomes and quickly iterate their options with greater speed.

In tandem with RCADE, the technical expertise provided by Raytheon engineers will complement the U.S. Army’s analysis enterprise. They will work together to meet the challenge of the future and solve complex evolving threats.

On February 1, Arlington, VA-based  Raytheon, an RTX business, announced that it has been awarded a $20 million contract through the Strategic and Spectrum Missions Advanced Resilient Trusted Systems (S2MARTS) consortium to develop a next-generation multi-chip package for use in ground, maritime and airborne sensors.

Under the contract, Raytheon will package state-of-the-art commercial devices from industry partners like AMD to create a compact microelectronics package that will convert radio frequency energy to digital information with more bandwidth and higher data rates. The integration will result in new system capabilities designed with higher performance, lower power consumption and reduced weight.

“By teaming with commercial industry, we can incorporate cutting-edge technology into Department of Defense applications on a much faster timescale,” said Colin Whelan, president of Advanced Technology at Raytheon. “Together, we will deliver the first multi-chip package that features the latest in interconnect ability – which will provide new system capabilities to our warfighters.”

This multi-chip package will be created with the latest in industry-standard die-level interconnect ability, enabling individual chiplets to reach their peak performance and achieve new system capabilities in a cost-effective and high-performance way. It’s designed for compatibility with Raytheon’s scalable sensor processing requirements.

Chiplets from commercial partners will be integrated onto a Raytheon-designed and fabricated interposer by our 3D Universal Packaging (3DUP™) domestic silicon manufacturing process in Lompoc, California. This award will be managed by the National Security Technology Accelerator and administered by the Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division in Indiana.
