On May 18, Raytheon, an RTX business, announced that it has been awarded a contract from the Office of Naval Research to further develop advanced radar software for next-generation naval radars.

Under the contract, Raytheon’s advanced technology team will develop software that enables each building block within a radar to operate independently, allowing a single radar to perform multiple missions simultaneously. By treating each building block as its own software-defined aperture, the radar can rapidly adapt to changing operational needs and better share crowded frequency bands with commercial networks such as 5G.

“The electromagnetic spectrum is more crowded than ever, and our systems have to be smarter about how they operate in it,” said Colin Whelan, president of advanced technology at Raytheon. “With precise, software-driven control over where and how we radiate, we’re taking an important step forward in how we use software‑defined apertures to keep pace with evolving mission demands.”

Building on Raytheon’s long-standing work in software‑defined apertures, this flexible, modular architecture delivers capability enhancements through software rather than hardware redesign. This approach allows radar performance to be adapted and expanded over time with greater speed, lower cost, and reduced risk.

Once the software development is complete, Raytheon will conduct a series of demonstrations to validate independent control of radar modules and associated capabilities such as multi-mission operation and spectrum sharing. Upon successful validation, the technology is expected to be transitioned into operational naval radar systems.

On December 18, BigBear.ai announced a strategic partnership with C Speed, LLC, a U.S.-based leader in radar and defense solutions, and a NewSpring Holdings’ platform company. Together, the companies will integrate BigBear.ai’s ConductorOS AI orchestration platform with C Speed’s software-defined LightWave Radar (LWR) system to deliver intelligent, autonomous, and real-time threat detection and decision support for global defense and homeland security partners.

The collaboration focuses on integrating AI-enabled threat detection, reporting, and response solutions into C Speed’s LWR suite of surveillance radars supporting air and missile defense, and counter-UAS (cUAS) applications. C Speed’s American-made radars are available now and currently deployed across multiple Department of Homeland Security, Department of War and international partner missions, as both aerostat-based and tower-based solutions. The partnership is expected to leverage BigBear.ai’s expanding presence across all geographic markets, including the Middle East, from BigBear.ai’s new office in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Both companies have common strategic growth objectives across key U.S. Customs and Border Protection, national security, and critical Department of War missions.

On December 8, HII announced that its Mission Technologies division has deployed and operationalized a next-generation high-performance spectrum dominance solution, now available for rapid detection and location of hostile communications, radar and other electronic threats.

HII will showcase its GRIMM technology — and its field-proven capabilities in situational awareness, intelligence support and force protection — at the Association of Old Crows’ 2025 International Symposium & Convention at National Harbor, Maryland.

GRIMM leverages decades of HII expertise developing electromagnetic warfare technology for national defense. Now deployed with mission success across a range of defense customers, it stands as a testament to HII’s commitment to innovation and operational excellence.

“GRIMM is a proven strategic asset for the U.S. military and its allies — and it is available now,” said Andy Green, executive vice president of HII and president of Mission Technologies. “Mission success requires a multi-domain, fully capable solution that provides the agility and precision our forces need to protect national interests worldwide, and GRIMM is delivering that capability today.”

GRIMM can fulfill a variety of missions, including military operations; counterterrorism and counternarcotics; intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; border security; and electromagnetic warfare (EW) and RF-enabled cyberspace operations. To date, the system has been deployed on unmanned platforms for both passive and active EW missions.

On October 13, Safran Federal Systems, a provider of Assured Position, Navigation, and Timing (A-PNT) solutions, announced its continued role in the U.S. Army’s Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor (LTAMDS) program, delivering advanced timing solutions that are integral to the radar system’s mission success. The company was first selected for LTAMDS in 2020, reflecting its track record of delivering trustworthy technology for Department of Defense programs of record.

Developed by Raytheon, an RTX business, LTAMDS is a next-generation radar designed to detect and defeat complex and emerging threats. As the program transitions into low-rate initial production, Safran’s VersaSync Flex system provides the precise, resilient timing architecture critical to the system’s 360-degree operational capability. The VersaSync Flex is engineered for low size, weight, power and cost (SWaP-C) to meet stringent operational demands.

“Our collaboration with Raytheon and the Army on the LTAMDS program demonstrates our commitment to resilient time synchronization technologies that support the modernization of U.S. and allied defense systems,” said Hironori Sasaki, president and chief executive officer of Safran Federal Systems. “Being selected to support LTAMDS with our VersaSync Flex is a testament to our proven record of delivering PNT solutions in mission-critical environments.”

LTAMDS is designed to counter evolving threats such as hypersonic weapons, advanced ballistic missiles and UAVs. Earlier this year, LTAMDS achieved the Department of Defense’s Major Capability Acquisition Milestone C designation, initiating the production and deployment phase of the program. LTAMDS is now officially designated a program of record by the U.S. Army and ready to support both its U.S. homeland defense and expeditionary missions.

On October 6, Kratos Defense & Security Solutions, Inc. announced that it has been awarded Phase 1 to begin developing an organic sustainment capability for the U.S. Navy’s AN/SPY-1 radar systems. Known internally to Kratos as Project Anaconda, the single-award agreement has an initial total projected ceiling of $175 million across multiple phases.

The AN/SPY-1 radar remains one of the most critical assets in the Navy’s fleet, enabling ballistic missile defense, integrated air and missile warfare, and persistent maritime domain awareness across Aegis-equipped cruisers and destroyers. With many systems projected to remain in service through 2065, the Navy has prioritized building long-term, organic sustainment and depot-level support capacity to ensure uninterrupted fleet readiness.

Central to Kratos’ solution is the new, Kratos owned and operated, state-of-the-art Indiana Radar Integration Complex (IRIC), strategically located within 1.5 miles of Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Crane. The 155,000-square-foot facility is expected to be operational in 2027 providing the U.S. Navy with a dedicated infrastructure for AN/SPY-1 sustainment and modernization.

“This strategic award validates Kratos’ proven approach of making significant internal investments in national security-focused infrastructure and capabilities to generate significant value for all Kratos stakeholders, including the United States,” said Eric DeMarco, president and CEO of Kratos. “The AN/SPY-1 program and our new IRIC represent the intersection of Kratos’ core philosophies: rapidly developing affordable, real-world solutions for critical defense needs, while providing true long-term value to our government customers, the U.S. taxpayer, and our entire stakeholder community. We anticipate that the Anaconda program will generate multi-decade value for both the United States Navy and Kratos.”

“Kratos’ MACH-TB contract award, the establishment of Prometheus Energetics LLC, and now the AN/SPY-1 sustainment contract award demonstrate Kratos’ commitment to pursuing business in the Crane region,” said Dave Carter, president of Kratos Defense and Rocket Support Services Division. “Like our investments in Oriole, Zeus, Erinyes, and Prometheus, this initiative will rapidly provide the competency needed to sustain warfighter capabilities. On September 23, Raytheon, an RTX business, announced that it has unveiled the latest iteration of its combat-proven APG-82 radar, the APG-82(V)X. The new radar variant incorporates cutting-edge gallium nitride (GaN) technology to enhance the radar’s effectiveness, delivering increased range, advanced air-to-air, air-to-ground and electronic warfare capabilities.

APG-82(V)X enables faster target detection, tracking and engagement with multi-function fire control and electronic warfare capabilities. As an advanced active electronically scanned array radar, it uses thousands of transmit and receive modules, which enable the radar to rapidly switch between transmitting and receiving signals, providing greater reliability and more precise targeting against aerial threats like cruise missiles, drones and modern fighter aircraft.

“The enhanced capability of this next-generation radar enables aircrew to detect and engage threats at longer ranges than ever before, providing a crucial first-look, first-shoot advantage,” said Dan Theisen, president of advanced products and solutions at Raytheon. “As the threat environment evolves, this new radar will ensure faster decision making and superior situational awareness in contested environments.”

The APG-82(V)X radar incorporates GaN technology, which provides greater range without needing additional power. It’s scalable and built with open architecture standards, with next generation technology and improved processor speed, providing significantly increased capability to current and future generation aircraft.

Development of the radars has begun in El Segundo, California and production of the radars will leverage mature production lines in Forest, Mississippi.

On September 4, Parsons Corporation announced that it has been awarded an $81 million Task Order under the Responsive Strategic Sourcing for Services (RS3) contract vehicle by the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command’s (DEVCOM), Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (C5ISR) Center. This recompete contract includes a 12-month base performance period and four 12-month option periods to deliver critical radar engineering solutions necessary for the C5ISR Center to meet its mission needs.

“We recognize the vital importance of C5ISR capabilities in addressing the complex security challenges, from emerging hypersonic threats to intelligence gathering at the tactical edge,” said Mike Kushin, Parsons’ President of Defense and Intelligence. “We are committed to equipping the U.S. Army DEVCOM with state-of-the-art radar solutions that bolster national security and ensure our forces maintain a strategic edge in modern warfare.”

Under this contract, Parsons will enhance Army aerial and ground radar capabilities by developing advanced radio frequency technologies, integrating AI, and providing systems engineering services tailored to the C5ISR Center’s mission requirements. This work will encompass operational support, program management, engineering, integration, prototype development, and fabrication.

On August 19, the National Ground Intelligence Center (NGIC) released a sources sought notice for Expert Radar Signature Solutions (ERADS). Responses are due by 3:00 p.m. Eastern on September 2.

NGIC is seeking information from any qualified vendor who can perform services for ERADS Wave Device/System Technical Assistance, Fabrication and Support requirement. NGIC is issuing this sources sought synopsis as a means for conducting market research to identify parties having an interest in and the resources to support this requirement. NGIC is seeking information on potential sources who are capable of providing support services as described in the attached NGIC ERADS Request for Information.

Questions regarding this sources sought notice should be submitted no later than 3:00 p.m. eastern on 25 August 2025 in writing to bradley.w.morris4.civ@army.mil and john.e.franklin73.civ@army.mil. Responses to this notice are due no later than 3:00 p.m. eastern on 2 September 2025.

On July 15, IonQ announced the completion of its acquisition of Capella Space Corporation, an American space tech company with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and satellite solutions for government and commercial applications. The closing marks a significant step in IonQ’s mission to develop the world’s first space-to-space and space-to-ground satellite quantum key distribution (QKD) network, enabling quantum-secure global communications, the company said.

With the acquisition now finalized, IonQ will begin developing a space-based QKD network by integrating Capella’s satellite infrastructure with its quantum technology. Once complete, this QKD network will enable secure communications that prevents encryption keys from being intercepted or copied without detection. It will also serve as a platform for additional quantum networking and sensing growth vectors. Capella customers will have access to rapid, ultra-secure SAR and remote sensing through the first quantum-enabled Earth observation platform.

“We have an exceptional opportunity to accelerate our vision for the quantum internet, where global QKD will play a foundational role in enabling secure communications,” said Niccolo de Masi, CEO of IonQ. “The integration of Capella’s advanced space-based platform and proven constellation of deployed satellites – along with IonQ’s quantum technologies – is expected to bolster commercial applications, global defense, and intelligence missions.”
