BAE Systems has delivered the sensor subassembly and sensor system controller components for the Next Generation Overhead Persistent Infrared Polar (NGP) program, the company announced May 15. The program will provide the U.S. Space Force with advanced missile warning, technical intelligence and battlespace characterization mission capabilities.

This milestone delivery keeps the program on track for full assembly of the payload, known as Flight Unit 1, expected to launch in 2028.

“We met multiple challenges across a multiyear timeframe to successfully deliver our components for the next stage of full payload assembly,” said Thai Sheridan, vice president and general manager of military space for BAE Systems Space & Mission Systems. “This program will provide essential next-generation defense and intelligence capabilities for the Space Force.”

The sensor subassembly built by BAE Systems is a significant component of the mission payload and provides the optics, pointing mechanism, controlling electronics and electrical bus interface to the spacecraft.

The sensor system controller interfaces directly to the space vehicle to receive commands and provide telemetry data for the mission. It provides power control and conversion for sensor assembly components as well as high-accuracy mirror direction.

The BAE Systems hardware originally was designed for use with the geosynchronous Earth orbit (GEO) element of the program. Featuring a highly adaptable design, the components were able to be repurposed for the NGP mission, allowing the program to meet challenging schedule needs.

On May 14, BAE Systems Geospatial eXploitation Products (GXP) and Vantor announced that they will be providing advanced intelligence and targeting capabilities for contested electronic warfare (EW) environments. This delivery integrates part of Vantor’s Raptor, a vision-based software suite that enables autonomous systems to navigate, orient, and extract accurate ground coordinates without relying on GPS, with the GXP software ecosystem, ensuring intelligence continuity when sensors are degraded.

In modern conflict zones, the proliferation of inexpensive unmanned aerial systems (UAS) with equally low-quality sensors, in addition to widespread GPS spoofing and jamming, have rendered traditional drone video collection unreliable. Significant metadata drift in tactical video feeds leads to “targeting paralysis”: high-quality imagery is available, but the underlying geographic coordinates are too inaccurate for precision activities.

To solve this, Raptor Sync georegisters the full-motion video feed from the drone’s on-board camera with Vantor’s 3D terrain data in real-time, enabling downstream GXP intelligence fusion, multi-domain interoperability across different sensors, and accurate ground coordinate extraction at a demonstrated absolute accuracy of <3 m. This system enables previously impossible intelligence and targeting workflows.

“In contested environments, the sensor’s imagery and video collections are only half the battle; the accuracy of the data it produces is what determines mission success,” said Kurt de Venecia, senior director of product development at BAE Systems GXP. “By including Raptor directly into our GXP intelligence workflows, we are providing analysts with the ability to maintain absolute targeting confidence, even when the platform’s systems or inertial sensors lack high absolute accuracy.”

Injecting corrected Key-Length-Value (KLV) metadata from Raptor directly into the drone’s video stream at the edge enhances accuracy prior to exploitation in GXP software. This overrides inaccurate telemetry, enabling analysts using GXP solutions to extract weapon-quality coordinates and execute intelligence and targeting missions in real time.

“Analysts cannot afford to lose confidence in where a target actually is,” said Paul Millhouse, senior director, raptor products at Vantor. “By using Raptor to correct video before it enters the GXP Ecosystem, we’re enhancing the performance of existing and new drone fleets. The result is a more resilient workflow for extracting accurate ground coordinates and maintaining operational tempo.”

On March 26, BAE Systems and Scale AI announced a strategic relationship agreement to accelerate the development and fielding of advanced artificial intelligence capabilities in support of the Department of War’s (DoW) high-stakes mission environments and operational platforms.

The collaboration brings together BAE Systems’ decades of mission knowledge in defense operations, systems integration and platforms, with Scale’s proven suite of agentic AI capabilities including the Scale Data Engine and Generative AI Platform. Together, the two organizations aim to integrate Scale’s AI capabilities directly into the architecture of the DoW’s most capable combat vehicles, deterrence programs, and future platforms.

“Modern warfare is won at the speed of data,” said Peder Jungck, chief innovation and strategy officer for the intelligence and security sector at BAE Systems. “By teaming with Scale AI, we are ensuring that the Department of War has access to the world’s most advanced agentic tools, to create intelligent, adaptive systems that can out-think and outpace the adversaries.”

BAE Systems FalconWorks and SURVICE Engineering announced on February 19 that they have signed a framework agreement to enable collaboration on the development of uncrewed air system (UAS) technologies.

The agreement builds on an existing agreement established in 2015 with Malloy Aeronautics (which was acquired by BAE Systems in 2024) who supply their uncrewed all electric logistics platform (T-150) to SURVICE Engineering, who support the US Armed Forces, including the US Marine Corps, with specialist combat equipment including uncrewed logistics platforms.

“The agreement comes at a time when UAS are increasingly important to defense and security, conducting a variety of roles from low-cost logistics to more complex and capable uncrewed systems that can operate alongside crewed combat aircraft.  We look forward to working together with SURVICE Engineering to develop this capability for the rapidly evolving battlespace,” said Anthony Gregory, business development director, BAE Systems FalconWorks.

“Partnering with Malloy, our successes include fielding the TRV-150 to the USMC and US Army and demonstrating use cases beyond logistics, including mine clearing, obscurant deployment, and weaponisation. The agreement with FalconWorks is a logical next step to continue advancing UAS technologies and use cases and we are excited to expand our relationship across the BAE FalconWorks portfolio and look forward to many more successes,” said Greg Thompson, president, SURVICE Engineering.

The new agreement will see BAE Systems and SURVICE Engineering working together to explore opportunities for collaboration across a wider product portfolio of small / tactical UAS. This agreement forms part of a wider BAE Systems strategy to accelerate new possibilities in uncrewed air systems to meet national and international defense and security requirements.

On February 12, BAE Systems, Inc. announced that it has appointed Mona Bates senior vice president and chief information and digital officer, effective February 23, 2026.

In this role, Bates will be a member of the BAE Systems, Inc., senior leadership team, reporting to President and Chief Executive Officer Tom Arseneault. She will be responsible for leading and executing the company’s technology and digital strategies to advance business priorities and enhance user experience. Bates will also lead the BAE Systems, Inc. IT function.

Bates has more than 20 years of IT and business expertise across industry and government, 15 years of which was with RTX (formerly Raytheon Technologies) companies where she most recently served as the Chief Digital Officer for Collins Aerospace.

“Mona’s vision along with her deep technical and business expertise make her the right leader to help position our company for long-term success,” said Arseneault. “She will play a key role in shaping the company’s digital transformation agenda by aligning technology investments with evolving business needs. By championing a culture of delivery excellence and leveraging emerging technologies like AI and advanced analytics, she will work to unlock new capabilities for our company and for our customers.”

Bates received her bachelor’s degree in computer networking from Regis University and her master’s of business administration in information technology management from the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs.

The U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has awarded BAE Systems’ FAST Labs research, development, and production organization a $16 million Phase 2 contract for the Oversight program, BAE Systems announced December 10. The Oversight program is focused on creating an autonomous system that keeps track, or maintains constant “custody,” of a large number of terrestrial assets via new satellite constellations.

The award follows the successful completion of the Phase 1 program. During Phase 1, BAE Systems’ software was integrated into a modeling and simulation environment to demonstrate a custody mission on representative satellite and sensor models. In Phase 2, BAE Systems will mature its solution algorithms and demonstrate operation with increasingly larger constellations, more complex scenarios, and higher fidelity modeling and simulation environments. The technology will be physically deployed to both tactical-edge satellites and ground stations.

“Future mission requirements are pushing capabilities to the tactical edge,” said Dr. Ben Cooper, senior principal scientist at BAE Systems’ FAST Labs research organization. “In space, this means operating primarily on-board satellites. Through this program, we will help make the space domain more tactically relevant for warfighters.”

The deployment of the software and algorithms developed on the Oversight program on board proliferated networked satellite constellations enables persistent surveillance at tactical timescales. Space-based coordination and data processing delivers lower latency and higher revisit rates enabling near real-time tracking. The increased scale, availability, and timeliness of information derived from space enhances warfighter situational awareness and speeds up decision making.

On December 8, BAE Systems announced that it has been awarded a $36 million production contract from Lockheed Martin to deliver Multifunction Modular Mast (MMM) systems for integration onto U.S. Navy submarines.

The MMM system is a radio frequency receiving antenna that provides U.S. Navy submarines the ability to detect, identify, and direction-find adversary communications signals before rising to the surface. The antennas will mount on new Virginia-class submarines and feed into Lockheed Martin’s AN/BLQ-10 electronic warfare (EW) system.

“In dynamic and contested environments, stealth is key, and submarines rely on accurate communications signal information to make decisions quickly,” said Michael Rottman, program area director for maritime sensors and systems at BAE Systems. “The Multifunction Modular Mast system equips U.S. Navy submarines with critical capabilities to locate and identify potential threats, enabling them to analyze and respond accordingly.”

As network-centric naval warfare evolves, advanced sensors, data links, communications, and EW systems are needed to outpace threats. The MMM system plays a critical role in electromagnetic spectrum dominance and strategic situational awareness. It provides operators with a reliable secondary source to detect nearby adversaries, in addition to radar and sonar.

The tactical communications receiving antenna resides in a composite radome. Its pressure-rated and corrosion-resistant design allows the unit to survive the harsh undersea environment and maximize signal-gathering performance while minimizing visibility of the mast and platform. The system also includes a payload module that enables the U.S. Navy to incorporate additional sensors for other mission applications.

On September 10, BAE Systems announced that its FAST Labs research, development, and production organization and the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) have signed a three-year Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) to advance quantum sensing and networking capabilities.

“This agreement will enable us to push the boundaries of quantum sensing and networking,” said Jane Heyes, principal scientist at BAE Systems’ FAST Labs. “Working with the Air Force Research Laboratory advances new possibilities for enhanced soldier communications, spectrum awareness, and electronic warfare.”

This collaboration aims to refine and integrate cutting-edge technologies into quantum sensors, networks, and distributed sensing research in an effort to revolutionize capabilities and enhance future security for defense and civilian applications.

“We look forward to industry collaboration which leverages AFRL expertise in quantum networking in concert with industry side expertise in quantum sensing,” said Dr. Erin C. Sheridan, research physicist in quantum information science at AFRL. “Combining multiples of these quantum RF sensors into an array is an exciting area of research in quantum sensing that will deliver new capabilities for the warfighter.”

Under the CRADA, BAE Systems’ FAST Labs will utilize its expertise in developing quantum RF sensors based on Rydberg atoms, which are highly excited atoms suitable for studying quantum mechanics and enabling new technologies. This approach allows for frequency-independent sensing, ideal for integration on smaller platforms.

Multiple RF antennas working together is necessary for different types of measurements that are important for a broad spectrum of defense interests.

Work on this program will take place at BAE Systems’ facilities in Merrimack, New Hampshire and AFRL’s Information Directorate in Rome, New York and at an AFRL field test site located in Stockbridge, New York.
